Tracking App

Project Time Frame: 2 Weeks

The Challenge

The challenge for this project was to design a mobile tracking app for iOS or Android. Based on user research, this app should serve the purpose of improving people’s day-to-day lives in the areas of wellness or finance by tracking data and visualizing it. The product of choice to be designed for this endeavor was the following nutrition tracking app.

Research

A quantitative survey was conducted to specify on what users want and need from a nutrition tracking app, in order to base the product on user needs:

Main Survey Findings

Although 54% of survey participants claimed they were conscious about their health and diet, 36% of said participants would want to be more conscious about their diet. The main motivators to pursue food tracking are health, fitness and mindfulness related.

Based on these findings and quick handshake with potential users, qualitative research was conducted with five out of a total of twenty-two survey-respondents, in order to gain an in-depth understanding about what precisely a nutrition app needs to provide in order to be deemed attractive by users. The following are some of the questions that were asked:

  1. How are you planning on achieving your current goals?

  2. How do you think a diet/nutrition app could help you reach your goals faster?

  3. Are you conscious about your diet? How does your level of mindfulness currently translate into practice?

  4. What kind of support would you need in order to maintain a healthy diet or to transition to a healthier diet? (e.g. tips, features, notifications, track of progress, recipes)

  5. What are the main obstacles faced in reaching your diet/nutrition goals that are usually throwing you off you progress? How could an app support you in overcoming them?

  6. If you had an app that would support you with your healthy food choices, would you use it? How often?

The findings of the totality of research conducted led to an analysis of pain points and needs which were then precisely put into “how might we” statements and a hypothesis, as follows.

How Might We..

1.) solve the main problems with using a nutrition tracker?

A main pain point people noted in relation to tracking their food was that it would be „too time consuming“ of a task to do. Potential solutions to solving this problem are integrating:

  • a photo log option to find nutritional information faster,

  • preference settings that show info according to the user’s dietary preferences

  • and an option to safe foods that are used more frequently.

2.) help people stick to their healthy nutrition journey?

The qualitative research showed that people would like to get:

  • reminders to motivate them on their journey, as well as

  • recipes that go along with their preference settings.

Hypothesis Statement

We believe by creating a nutrition tracker app which allows users to keep track of their intakes and macros while also sending reminders and providing immediate recipe solutions, it will help them stick to a consistent nutrition journey. We will know we are right if people are feeling better about their progress.
